Matte or Glossy? How to Choose a Replacement Laptop Screen

When a laptop screen is replaced, you usually get a choice you didn’t know you had: the new panel can be matte or glossy, standard or high‑refresh, and sometimes a better resolution than the original. Here’s how we help customers in Bentleigh East choose, and what each option changes.

Matte vs glossy

Matte (anti‑glare) panels have a textured coating that scatters reflections. They are easier on the eyes in bright rooms, near windows and outdoors, and show fewer fingerprints. Colours look slightly softer. Glossy panels have a smooth surface: colours look punchier and blacks deeper, which is why most MacBooks and media laptops use them, but they mirror whatever is behind you. Most business laptops ship matte; most consumer and gaming laptops are split. If your original was glossy and you hated the reflections, a screen replacement is the moment to switch – the panel fits the same way.

Resolution: HD, Full HD, 2K, 4K

A 15.6″ HD (1366×768) panel can usually be upgraded to Full HD (1920×1080) during replacement, provided the laptop’s display cable and graphics support it – we check the model first. The difference in sharpness is large and the price difference is small. Going further to 2K or 4K is model‑specific and rarely worth it on a laptop that didn’t ship with it. If a replacement has left your screen looking wrong, see resolution issue after screen replacement.

Refresh rate and panel type

Gaming laptops use 120, 144 or 165 Hz panels; replacing one with a 60 Hz panel will fit and work but feel noticeably worse, so we match the original rate. Panel technology matters too: IPS panels have wide viewing angles and accurate colour; cheaper TN panels wash out when viewed from the side. Unless you ask otherwise, we fit an IPS panel of the same or better specification than the original.

Touch screens

Touch laptops use a bonded glass‑and‑panel assembly, which costs more and sometimes has to come as a complete lid. If you never use the touch function, some models can be fitted with a standard non‑touch panel instead, saving a fair amount – we’ll tell you if yours is one of them.

Brightness

Panels are rated in nits. 250 nits is standard; 300–400 nits is noticeably better in bright rooms and is often available for a little more. If you work near windows or outside, ask for the brighter option.

What we fit by default

  • Same size, same connector and mounting – it has to be, or it won’t fit.
  • Same or better resolution and refresh rate as the original.
  • IPS where available; matte or glossy to match the original unless you ask to switch.
  • New panels only, with a warranty on the part and the fitting.

How long it takes

Common 14″ and 15.6″ Full HD panels are in stock and replaced while you wait – usually 60 to 120 minutes including a full test for dead pixels and backlight evenness. Less common panels are ordered and normally here within one to three business days.

Frequently asked questions

Can I change from glossy to matte when my screen is replaced?

Yes, on almost all Windows laptops – the panel mounts the same way. MacBooks are glossy only.

Can an HD screen be upgraded to Full HD?

Often yes on 15.6″ laptops, if the display cable and graphics support it. We check your exact model first.

Will a different brand of panel look different?

Panels are made by a handful of manufacturers (BOE, AUO, LG, Innolux, Samsung) and sold to every laptop brand. A matched specification looks and performs the same.
